ROBERT THORNTON says he has got the blend right to hit the big time again - thanks to coffee.
The Stevenston ace has slipped down to world No26 and out of the oche elite after a nightmare two years. After a good start to his PDC career, The Thorn ended up in court following a drunken row with his wife and lost form and confidence after breaking his hand.
Now Thornton, who faces two crucial events in Canada, is adamant coffee beans can stop him becoming a has-been.
He said: "Nowadays instead of a glass of Southern Comfort in my hand it's a mug of coffee - and it's working wonders for me.
"I need to start getting results to keep my career alive.
"The great thing is coffee keeps me buzzing. I can't sit still for long and that makes me practice more and keeps me sharp.
"It's already started to pay off for me big time. I played much better in the UK Open making the quarter-finals, my best run in months.
"I'm starting to find my old 'A' game again. Now I just need to finish legs off quicker and the results will come easier."
Thornton's PDC ranking saw him miss out on the summer's Matchplay and European Championships.
He now faces two events in Ontario, Canada next week where he needs results to get him back into the winter season of UK TV tournaments.
Thornton added: "I'm at a real crossroads which will decide how 2011 pans out for me.
"I need at least a couple of quarter-finals and a semi from the next few events to get me into the World Grand Prix in October.
"If I qualify for that I can earn big money with a decent run and jump up the rankings.
"But if I fail then it's going to be a long hard winter."
Thornton will line up alongside Gary Anderson, Jamie Caven and Colin Lloyd in Inverness and Orkney exhibitions this weekend.
He said: "I think Gary and I will have a bigger battle off the oche fighting over the coffee machine. We're both coffee addicts!
