WES NEWTON is ready to get NASTY to become world champion.
The 'Warrior' admits he needs to live up to his moniker to make a name for himself on the oche.Newton, a double Alexandra Palace quarter-finalist, is the unsung star of world darts.
Despite making the UK Open major final this year and racking up £215,000 in prize money on the way to becoming World No 7 — he's still not considered a big time player outside of the sport.
Now Newton, who plays Dutch youngster Kurt van de Rijck tonight has taken on oche hardman Peter Manley as a mentor in a bid to become a scarier rival.
He admits: "Maybe I should get on the stage and start punching my opponent — that would make me a big name overnight.
"I really do need to toughen up my game though, I need to make my opponents more scared of me.
"I'm just too laid back and too much of a nice guy and I think that doesn't worry my rivals.
"I want my next opponents to lie awake at night terrified to play me. That has worked for Phil Taylor for years.
"I just need to become Mr Nasty with my darts. If I win matches and become tough to beat, that will worry players."
Newton, from Fleetwood, dismisses talk of a Ally Pally hoodoo after two quarter-final exits.
He added: "I don't have a problem with the quarters, It is all part of a learning curve. I feel I'm on the fringe of something big. I keep making quarters and semis but I know it will come eventually. It's progress."
Newton is also getting stick off his pals after being given a Gary Pallister lookalike tag in SunSport this week — because he's a Liverpool fan!
He added: "I've had tons of text messages giving me stick from my mates. Nothing personal to Gary, but it's probably the worst possible team for me to be likened to.
"I guess I am solid and dependable though. It would be nice to land as many trophies as he did.
"Perhaps if I can get nasty I might just achieve that."
