Players Championship 2 Winner Michael Smith

MICHAEL SMITH won his second professional title with victory in Sunday's Spanish Darts Classic Players Championship in Benidorm, denying Justin Pipe a weekend double with a 6-3 win in the final.

The 21-year-old from St Helens had won a UK Open Qualifier last February in Barnsley, and picked up the £6,000 first prize from the second PDC ProTour event of 2012.

Having missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish during a defeat to Pipe during Saturday's Players Championship, Smith gained revenge against the Taunton ace with a 6-3 win in Sunday's decider.

After edging two of the first three legs in the final, Smith secured the first break of throw with a brilliant fourth leg, hitting a 180 and taking out a 130 checkout on double five.

Tops in the next moved him into a 4-1 lead before Pipe finished double ten and landed a 180 and a 121 checkout to pull back to within a leg.

Pipe, though, crucially missed a dart at double 18 to level as Smith held his nerve on double ten to lead 5-3, and he posted double four to secure the victory.

Smith had started the day with wins over Jose Luis Torres and Magnus Caris before seeing off Paul Nicholson, Peter Wright and St Helens rival Dave Chisnall to reach the semi-finals.

World number three James Wade hit a 161 finish in taking a 3-2 lead, but Smith hit back to win four of the next five and move into the final.

The youngster - who lost 3-0 to Co Stompe on his World Championship debut in December - broke down in tears after the final as he celebrated a triumph which puts him in pole position to qualify for a return to Alexandra Palace as well as the year's other majors.

"It means so much for me to win this," said Smith. "I was so disappointed after the World Championship that I didn't want to pick up my darts again, but my Dad made me watch the game four or five times and after a week off I got back on the board.

"I've come into this year with the hunger to show people what I can do instead of what they saw in the World Championship, because I missed too many doubles at Ally Pally and Co punished me.

"I've got a diary at home which has my goals for the year; to hit a nine-darter, to win a ProTour event and get into the top 40 in the world, so I've ticked one of those off already.

"It's the second PDC tournament I've won and undoubtedly the most important I've ever won, and it's hard to describe how I feel - I'm over the moon.

"I came close to a nine-darter on Saturday but that's only one leg, it's winning matches that gets you championships and I've managed to do that. Justin beat me 6-3 yesterday so it's nice to get the payback against him today."

Pipe had defeated Paul Nicholson in Saturday's final, and his wins on Sunday included a second of the weekend over Mark Webster, defeats of new Tour Card holders John Bowles and Ross Smith, a 6-4 defeat of Andy Hamilton and a narrow 6-5 semi-final win over Matt Clark, where he hit a 14-dart finish to edge victory.

Clark won through to the semis only a week after having to compete in Qualifying School to retain his Tour Card, showing his quality with fine wins over Jelle Klaasen, Tony West, John Part, Mensur Suljovic and Kim Huybrechts in earning £2,000 prize money.

World number three Wade was the other semi-finalist, having come close to repeating the performance which saw him take victory in Benidorm last October.

The left-hander followed up a win over McCoy's Premier League Darts new-boy Kevin Painter by whitewashing Holland's Toon Greebe and coming from 5-3 down to win his quarter-final with Alex Roy.

Roy had also lost out to Wade in Saturday's event, in the Last 32, but defeated Mervyn King and Vincent van der Voort on his way to the quarter-finals of a Players Championship for the first time since 2008.

World Championship quarter-finalist Kim Huybrechts continued his good form by reaching the Last Eight in Spain alongside Dave Chisnall and newcomer Ross Smith, who was another of last week's Tour Card winners.

Former Lakeside Championship finalist Dean Winstanley reached the Last 16 in only his second Players Championship event, defeating fellow newcomer Ted Hankey 6-1 in Sunday's preliminary round and also seeing off Terry Temple, Wayne Jones and Simon Whitlock before losing to Chisnall

Pipe Wins First Players Championship of 2012

JUSTIN PIPE won the opening Players Championship of 2012 with a 6-0 whitewash of Paul Nicholson in Saturday's Spanish Darts Trophy final in Benidorm.

Pipe continued the form which saw him reach six of the last ten Players Championship finals in 2011 by claiming his fourth ranking title and a £6,000 prize at the Melia Hotel.

The 40-year-old from Taunton showed strong form throughout the event as he picked up seven victories, having begun the day by seeing off Eduardo Sales Lopes, Michael Barnard and Michael Smith.

He then defeated Mark Webster 6-4, saw off Shaun Griffiths 6-2 in the quarter-finals and Ian White 6-4 in the semis, but saved his most convincing display for the decider.

Having hit a 180 in the final's opening leg, Pipe also took the next two to lead 3-0 before finishing 81 in two darts for a four-leg advantage.

Nicholson missed two darts at double 18 in the fifth as Pipe hit a tricky tops with his third dart to move a leg away from the win, which he sealed by following a 180 with an improvised 26 finish of double six and double seven.

"It's a brilliant way to start the year," said Pipe. "Paul's always a tough opponent so I'm delighted to have won the final, and it wasn't as easy as the scoreline might suggest.

"I couldn't have asked for anything else today and it's fantastic to have carried my form from the latter part of last year into 2012.

"It was my first competition using my new Cosmo Darts set-up of barrels, flights and stems, so it´s a further boost to do so well with them."

He added: "I´d like to dedicate the win to my wife Claire - it´s her birthday on Sunday so this will help to buy her a nice present!"

Nicholson, meanwhile, picked up £3,000 as he enjoyed a run to the final, which included a high-quality 6-2 victory over Magnus Caris in the semis.

He also overcame Co Stompe, Steve Beaton and Mark Walsh in his run on the day in a strong start to the year.

White hit the first nine-dart finish of 2012 during his run to the semis, and receives a £2,000 bonus for the feat, which he hit during a first round victory over Mark Hylton.

The Stoke ace also whitewashed Matt Clark, defeated newcomer Keith Stephen and Terry Jenkins 6-5 and came from 2-0 down to see off Darren Whittingham 6-2 in the quarter-finals.

Sweden's Caris reached his maiden PDC ProTour semi-final, picking up wins over Richie Burnett, Dave Smith, Arron Monk, Darren Webster and Wes Newton in picking up £2,000 prize money.

Whittingham followed up his success in winning a Tour Card on the first day of Qualifying School with his best-ever finish on the PDC ProTour as he saw off three-time World Champion John Part, Dutch youngsters Toon Greebe and Jerry Hendriks and Steve Brown on the day.

Manchester youngster Shaun Griffiths joined Whittingham in the last eight, seeing off Dave Chisnall, Belgian Kurt Van De Rijck Colin Lloyd and Adrian Gray, while the ever-consistent Wes Newton and Mark Walsh also reached the quarters.

Norfolk's Darren Webster made a successful return to the PDC circuit by reaching the Last 16 alongside another of last weekend's Tour Card winners, Sussex's Adrian Gray.

There would be no fairytale debuts on the PDC ProTour for Ted Hankey, Dean Winstanley and Tony West, who all failed to reach the Last 64.

Hankey was knocked out in the preliminary round by Matthew Edgar, who hit back from 4-2 down to win 6-4, while Winstanley lost to Kim Hubrechts in round one and West was defeated by Andy Smith.

Both Co Stompe and Michael Smith went close to sharing the nine-dart finish bonus with White, but missed double 12 for perfect legs during the tournament in games against James Hubbard and Justin Pipe respectively.

Benidorm Players Championship Entries

THE first Players Championships of 2012 will be held on January 28 & 29 at the Media Hotel Benidorm, as newcomers Ted Hankey, Dean Winstanley, Tony West and James Hubbard make their PDC ProTour debuts.

Two £35,000 Players Championships will be played during the weekend in Benidorm, featuring 150 players on Saturday and 144 players on Sunday.

The field includes top PDC stars James Wade and Mervyn King - the winners in Benidorm last October - as well as five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, World Championship finalist Andy Hamilton and Australian ace Simon Whitlock.

PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship finalist James Hubbard will make his first appearance on the PDC ProTour as he turns professional, while many new Tour Card holders also make their PDC debuts.

They include two-time Lakeside Champion Ted Hankey, former World Masters winner Tony West and 2011 Lakeside Championship finalist Dean Winstanley, as well as John Bowles, who reached the Last 16 of the UK Open as an amateur qualifier last June.

The field also includes non-PDPA members from across Europe, including a series of 16 qualifiers who won through a knockout held in Spain.

Play in each event will commence at 12pm, and all games will be the best of 11 legs. The draw will be made at 11am following the close of registration, with the leading 32 players from the One-Year ProTour Rolling Order of Merit seeded.

Play will be held across 16 dartboards, plus selected games throughout the event and the semi-finals and final will be played on stage.

High Speed Lewis

WORLD champ Adrian Lewis suffered a terrifying high-speed motorway puncture — and claims racetrack training saved his LIFE.

Jackpot was travelling up to Scotland on the M6 for exhibition appearances against Gary Anderson when his car violently veered out of control.
He skidded towards a lorry but regained control of the car and turned it towards the outside lane and out of danger.
Lewis, who wrapped up his second world title just three weeks ago, admitted a charity race track day and skid training he attended five years ago saved him from a horror crash.
He said: "It was pretty scary. At first when I had the puncture I started to lose control of the car, but then in a split second I remembered the training I'd had on how to deal with skids.
"I got the car under control and got the front end of the car out from under the lorry just in time.
"If it hadn't been for the track day I might not have been as lucky — it's probably the best thing I've ever done for charity!"
Lewis' next target is a World Cup medal when he lines up with Phil Taylor for England in the event which starts next week in Hamburg.
Two years ago Taylor and James Wade suffered a shock exit at the hands of Spain. Lewis insists there will be no repeat as they aim to snatch the crown off holders Holland.
Lewis added: "It was one of the biggest shocks in darts history when Spain beat us. But it didn't happen for Phil and James on the night.
"I don't think it was complacency, I just think the Spanish boys had the tournament of their lives and fair play to them. But Phil and I have known each other a long time. We've already spoken about the World Cup and are excited about it.
"We're not bothered about being hot favourites. We're used to that sort of pressure in every event we enter.
"Phil has had a target on his back for 20 years so he should be used to it!
"There are some great pairings out there. The Dutch, Scots, Aussies and Welsh look very strong, but if Phil and I can find our 'A' games then no one will touch us.
"Both of us are desperate to win a World Cup."

West wins PDC Spot

Former BDO World Masters champion Tony West led the first four winners of PDC Tour cards after the opening day of the Qualifying School in Barnsley.

West joined Darren Whittingham, Richie Howson and Andrew Cornwall in claiming Tour cards and joining the PDC after he defeated Isle of Wight youngster Keegan Brown in their deciding game.
"I'm over the moon," said West. "It's been an amazing couple of weeks for me because I lost my darts before playing at Lakeside and I've not been able to settle with a set since then.
"I chopped and changed a bit during the day with using different flights but I've managed to get through.
"This is only the first step for me though and it's a new start in my career. I can play in all the events on the PDC circuit now and I want to make an impression."

Young gun

While West was the most experienced of the four Tour Card winners on Thursday, 20-year-old Whittingham, a warehouse operative from Market Drayton, was the youngest to qualify.
"I'm lost for words," said Whittingham, who also defeated Wayne Pepper, Paul Davison, James Young, recent World Championship qualifier Kurt Van De Rijck and Nigel Birch on Thursday.
"Winning a Tour Card takes the pressure off you because you're guaranteed a place in all the ProTour events, so it's a massive chance for me to get experience and hopefully establish myself.
"I can still play on the Youth Tour too but my goal now is to qualify for the World Championship next December."
Howson, a cabinet maker from Essex, will now turn professional after defeating Holland's Mareno Michels 6-2 in his decisive game.
"The UK Open was a great experience for me and it made me want to come and play in the PDC," said Howson, 46. "I wasn't expecting to qualify on the first day but I played well and everything came together for me. I can't believe it - it's awesome and I'm really looking forward to the next couple of years."

Cornwall qualifies

Blackburn's Andrew Cornwall was the other Tour Card winner as he enjoyed a brilliant debut in a PDC event, as the 40-year-old LED company owner took out finishes of 156 and 120 in defeating Canada's Jeff Smith 6-3 in his final game of the day.
"This is amazing for me," said Cornwall. "I've only been playing for three years or so but I did quite well last year and wanted to give the PDC Qualifying School a try.
"To get through is fantastic and hopefully I can have a good go at proving myself on the professional tour now. It's going to be hard running my company and playing on the circuit, but hopefully I can pick up a couple of sponsors and give it my best shot."
There was disappointment on the first of four days for 2011 Lakeside Championship finalist Dean Winstanley, who was defeated 6-5 in the second round by Pat Pace, who took out an 11-darter to win the deciding leg of their contest.
John Bowles, who reached the last 16 at the 2011 UK Open, knocked out former Las Vegas Desert Classic winner Peter Manley and Andy Jenkins before losing to Andrew Johnson in the fourth round, while 1996 World Matchplay winner Peter Evison was knocked out in the second round by Tony Tasker.
Former Lakeside Champion Les Wallace was defeated by Murnan in the second round, while 2004 winner Andy Fordham pulled out during his first game with a back injury, but hopes to be able to compete in the remaining days.
Play continues on Friday, when the remaining players return to compete in day two of four at the Barnsley Metrodome, with four Tour Cards to be awarded and further ranking points on offer.

Taylor still going strong

Phil Taylor has dismissed suggestions that his powers could be on the wane ahead of the upcoming McCoy's Premier League Darts campaign.

The 51-year-old was surprisingly knocked out in the second round of the recent Ladbrokes World Darts Championship, prompting speculation that his time as the dominant force in world darts may be over.
But Taylor, whose list of 2011 victories included the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts and the first Players Championship Finals at the start of the year, is not ready to give in yet.
'The Power' says he has not made any major changes to his practice routine, but has embarked on a new fitness drive in a bid to re-establish himself as the best in the world.
"I'm practising normally, I'm in the gym, I've lost weight and I'm getting fitter," the 15-time world champion told Sky Sports from Norfok where he was appearing as part of a competition for JJb Sports.
He added: "I've been written off more times than Rocky Balboa and I've had more comebacks than Rocky Balboa.

Phil Taylor will be appearing in the Turnstone Pub in Norfolk on Thursday evening to play against lucky JJB Sports prize-winner Paul Blisset.

Majors

"I won four majors out of seven, so I've not done too badly. It's nice to shove two fingers up at those people (who have written me off), of course it is, but I'm not too worried about it."
'The Power' was taking time out of his practice to play a game of darts with Paul Blisset, who won the chance to play Taylor in JJb Sport's 40th anniversary competition.
Taylor also believes that the gruelling 15-week Premier League schedule will mean that those who can perform well consistently will rise to the top.
He said: "The Premier League is brilliant because it's an endurance one. You can't win the Premier League in a week, you have to do it over four months. It's a good tournament."
The first week of the competition will see Taylor face off against fellow Stoke thrower and current world champion Adrian Lewis, a clash the five-time Premier League winner is already relishing.
"To be honest they're all tough, but it will be a little bit extra special because he's the world champion. So I'm looking forward to that one, I'll be ready for him," Taylor said.
Lewis, who was known as a protege of Taylor when he first burst onto the scene, successfully defended his world title earlier in January despite being on the brink of elimination against James Wade in the semi-finals.

"I've been written off more times that Rocky Balboa and I've had more comebacks than Rocky Balboa."

Spirit

Taylor added: "He had his back against the wall a couple of times so he did very well to get out of that.
"He was 5-1 down against Wadey but he came back, showed a little bit of spirit and ended up winning. That's what you have to do."
But Taylor will also have to cope with the challenge of six more of the world's best players, including debutants Kevin Painter and Andy Hamilton, the latter of which claimed the runner-up spot at the World Championship.
"It's good for them and good for their careers, it puts a few bob in the back pocket for them. They will enjoy it but they'll find it tough because it's every week - travelling week-in, week-out," he said.
"I think Paul (Nicholson) was unlucky to miss out, he would have been a good asset but maybe he'll get in next year."

Anastasia Dobromyslova could be set to leave the BDO

OCHE queen Anastasia Dobromyslova could be set to leave the BDO after officials tried to ban her FLIGHTS.

The Russian beauty won her second world title on Friday night, coming from a set down to beat Deta Hedman 2-1.
It came after tournament bosses told her just 30 minutes before her semi-final that she couldn't use her flights.
Then after beating Trina Gulliver in the semi, the BDO website report called her a "snarling Russian", "arrogant" and that she "played mind games to topple the Golden Girl".
BBC commentators continually criticised her for slowing the game down and after she won the final officials IGNORED her when she returned to the players' lounge.
Now Ana, 27, will decide this week whether to return to the PDC and take on the men again.
She admitted: "An official told me my flights were wrong and I couldn't use them — but he had no explanation for this.
"Then the next day when I was preparing for the final I was told of the BDO report which criticised me badly and also the commentators said I was trying to slow the semi-final down.
"They couldn't stop me winning. They gave me the motivation to win, I showed how much bottle I have got to win it.
"It's been like this for me since returning to the BDO, I've been treated very badly.
"They clearly haven't forgiven me for leaving them for the PDC and not defending my first world title in 2008."
Ana received support from fellow PDC pros, men's finalist Andy Hamilton, Mark Webster and Paul Nicholson on Twitter as the BDO report became big news.
Now the Russian could be set to join them again.
She added: "It's a very tough decision. I want to be a world champion and I'm so happy to have achieved that again.
"Perhaps I can only improve my game by playing the men.
"I'm definitely a better player since being in the PDC. Playing in the PDC hardened me up and I'd the belief to stay strong in both matches. I missed lots of doubles at times but I'm so happy I won. People can say what they want and try to put me off, but no one can take away my world titles."

BDO World Championships neck injury

Three-time BDO world champion Martin Adams has revealed that a neck injury hindered his 2012 title defence.

The 55-year-old failed in his bid for a third consecutive Lakeside crown after going out in the quarter-finals to eventual runner-up Tony O'Shea.
He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "It prevented me from putting in the right amount of practice before playing Tony.
"I was in quite a lot of pain when I played Gary Stone [in the previous round] and got away with it."

ADAMS' SUCCESS

Martin Adams has won three BDO world titles, in 2007, 2010 and 2011

The Cambridgeshire and England team captain added: "You can't stand and put in the hours you would normally put in.
"For whatever reason when I woke up on the Monday morning at Lakeside I just couldn't turn my head.
"But that's the way things go. We're not moaning or crying about it.
"We're just getting on with it for the next event which is the Dutch Open."
O'Shea went on to lose in the final to Dutch qualifier Christian Kist and Adams, a member of the British Darts Organisation board, admitted the new champion was something of an unknown quantity.
"I can't really tell you more about him than what's been said on the television," he said.
"I've never played him. People say he's a good player but until I face him I can't cast any opinion on what the guy's like."

Adrian Lewis plays Phil Taylor in Premier League

Two-time PDC world champion Adrian Lewis will play world number one Phil Taylor in the opening week of the 2012 Premier League in Manchester.

The Stoke-on-Trent duo will meet on 9 February in a repeat of the first fixture in the 2011 tournament.
On that occasion, Lewis beat Taylor 8-2 at the O2 Arena in London.
Gary Anderson, who beat Lewis in the final to win the Premier League last year, starts the defence of his title against debutant Kevin Painter.
Elsewhere, James Wade will play Andy Hamilton and Raymond van Barneveld takes on Simon Whitlock.
The eight players meet each other twice in the group stages, with the top four moving on to the play-offs at the O2 Arena on 17 May.
Taylor is a five-time winner of the Premier League, but his challenge in 2011 was ended by Lewis in the semi-finals at Wembley.
However, Lewis could not follow up his 8-3 victory over the 15-time world champion and was beaten 10-4 by Scotland's Anderson in the final later that evening.

More Could Follow Hankey

Ted Hankey could be the first of many players to make the switch from BDO to PDC according to darts supremo Barry Hearn.

The 43-year-old made the decision following his semi-final defeat at Lakeside to Christian Kist.
"I'll miss this place but it's time to move on," he said.
BDO world number three Dean Winstanley also heads 160 entries for the 2012 PDC Pro Tour qualifying school.
The second qualifying school will be held from 19 January to 22 January, offering any darts player the chance to win a tour card to compete on the PDC's £5m circuit.
Other entries include former World Masters winner Tony West and his brother Steve, who both competed alongside Winstanley in the Lakeside Championship last week.
PDC tour cards will be awarded to the four semi-finalists from each one-day tournament staged from 19-22 January.

PDC versus BDO

• In 1992, 16 of the world's top players formed a breakaway organisation, the World Darts Council (WDC), but continued to play in the BDO until 1993.
• The WDC, later the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), held its own version of the world championship in 1994.
• Former BDO world champions who made the switch to the PDC are John Lowe, Eric Bristow, Keith Deller, Bob Anderson, Phil Taylor, Dennis Priestley, John Part, Richie Burnett, Steve Beaton, Raymond van Barneveld, Jelle Klassen and Mark Webster.
• Only four players have won both BDO and PDC world titles - Dennis Priestley, Phil Taylor, John Part and Raymond van Barneveld.

Ranking points will also be allocated for finishing positions in each event, this then forms a ranking list from which further players will receive a tour card.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live earlier Hearn said: "Darts is an exploding sport, there's huge amounts of opportunity, huge amounts of money and there's no surprise these players are making the move."
Fifteen-time world champion Phil Taylor recently urged Hankey to join him on the PDC circuit, saying: "Ted should show some bottle, come over and have a go. We're both Stokies and I want him to come over."
The PDC was first formed in 1992 with just 16 players, there are now over 400.
Hankey is the latest big name player to make the switch, the last one being Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld in 2006, after 15 years on the tour.
The Stoke born player made his debut in the BDO World Championships in 1998, reaching the quarter finals.
His first title came two years later beating Ronnie Baxter 6-0 in the final.
He reached the final again 12 months later, losing to John Walton before winning a second title in 2009 beating Tony O'Shea 7-6.
Hearn predicts that "The Count" will be a big hit.
"He's a big character and he's going to be a big success in the PDC circuit," he said.
"He's got something about him.
"That's the thing about sport these days is that the characters who play the game make it more exciting for the punters to go and watch and of course if they play at the highest level then they're a valuable addition."

Kist beats O'Shea to win title

Christian Kist completed a remarkable Lakeside debut by beating Tony O'Shea to take the BDO world title.

Qualifier Kist, a road worker from the Netherlands, entered the tournament as a rank outsider.
But the 25-year-old defeated O'Shea 7-5 in a thrilling final to win the £100,000 prize, reported to be 50 times his career earnings to date.
"I was 6-2 in front and there was no problem and then Tony came back and the nerves came," Kist told BBC Sport.

During the tournament, Kist tore up the formbook, beating sixth seed and countryman Jan Dekker, Belgian Geert De Vos, England's Alan Norris and two-time world champion Ted Hankey.
In Sunday's final, Englishman O'Shea, known as "The Silverback", who lost 7-6 in a thrilling final against Ted Hankey in 2009, started brightly, reeling off the first three legs to take the first set as Kist struggled to hit the trebles.
But the Dutchman settled down to win the next two sets and take the lead in the best-of-13 match.
The fourth set went down to a deciding leg, with O'Shea holding his nerve to complete a 68 checkout to level the scores.
Kist won the fifth, which included a 12-dart checkout to take the first leg, and then also claimed the sixth set to lead 4-2 at the interval.

After the break, Kist showed no signs of feeling the pressure as he secured the next two sets to move to within one of his maiden World Championship crown.
The Dutchman edged to within two legs of the title but O'Shea, who knocked out defending champion Martin Adams in the quarter-finals, stopped the rot by clawing back a set to reduce the deficit to three.
The momentum looked to have swung towards "The Silverback" as he won six straight legs to trail by just one set.
But Kist finally got a leg on the board and when O'Shea lost the penultimate leg after miscounting his checkout on 112, Kist seized back the momentum and hit the double 16 at the second time of asking for victory.

Ted Hankey quits BDO For PDC

Ted Hankey has announced he is leaving the BDO for the PDC Tour in the aftermath of a thrilling semi-final defeat to Christian Kist.

Hankey lost 6-5 having led 5-3, complaining that he lost concentration when the air conditioning was turned on
'The Count' narrowly missed a bullseye for the match at 5-4 before Kist won the next two sets for victory.
Kist faces Tony O'Shea in Sunday's final after the Englishman beat Wesley Harms 6-5 in another Lakeside thriller.

Kist started the match strongly, taking a 2-1 lead, but Hankey slowly began to find his rhythm and looked to have the contest wrapped up when he clinched the eighth set to lead 5-3.
Kist won the ninth to reduce the deficit to 5-4 but Hankey had a shot at the bull to win the match in a nerve-jangling 10th set, only for his dart to land the wrong side of the wire.
'The Lipstick' stole that set to level the scores at 5-5 before taking the final set 3-0 as Hankey lost his cool, tossing away a dart and twice complaining to officials about a draught on the oche.
Qualifier Kist was shocked to reach the final at his first attempt: "I really can't find the words to say how I feel. It's a surprise, I cannot believe it. I never give up, I just keep going on and on."

15-time world champion Phil Taylor recently urged Hankey to join him on the PDC circuit, saying: "Ted should show some bottle, come over and have a go. We're both Stokies and I want him to come over."
In the other semi-final, O'Shea won the first set before Harms bounced back to win three of the next four and establish a 3-2 lead.
O'Shea, a World Championship finalist in 2009, refused to back down, winning three of the next four sets to lead 5-4.
Harm levelled at 5-5 before both players, like Hankey, asked organisers to investigate a draught. This time, the match was suspended.
When the players returned for the decider, it was O'Shea who settled the quicker of the two with the Englishman going on to win the set and reach his second World Championship final.

Hankey reaches Lakeside last four

Ted Hankey brushed aside Martin Atkins to reach the the semi-finals of the BDO World Championship at the Lakeside.

Hankey, the number 15 seed and champion on two previous occasions, hammered Atkins 5-1 to book a meeting with Dutchman Christian Kist.
Kist, a Lakeside debutant, beat England's Alan Norris 5-1 to reach the last four.
Earlier, Anastasia Dobromyslova beat England's Deta Hedman 2-1 at to win her second BDO women's world title.
The unseeded Russian, in her first world championship after a spell with the PDC, fought back from a set down to defeat the number one seed.

Hankey, who last won the title in 2009, took the first set against the darts in a fifth-leg decider and raced into a 4-0 lead.
Atkins notched his only set in the fifth, but Hankey sealed his fourth Lakeside semi-final appearance in the sixth with a checkout of 64.
"I didn't play well, but Martin didn't play well either," said Hankey. "Things didn't seem to go well for either of us but I got the edge and kept finishing.
"I've got to be happy, because I'm in the semi-finals. I've got to wake up, because if I play like that then Christian Kist will destroy me.
"All you can do in any sport is beat the man in front of you, but playing like that won't be good enough in the semi-finals."
Hankey and Kist meet on Saturday, with Tony O'Shea taking on Wesley Harms.

Dobromyslova Beats Deta Hedman

Anastasia Dobromyslova beat England's Deta Hedman 2-1 at the Lakeside to win her second BDO women's world title.

Anderson No Chance Says Bristow

OCHE legend Eric Bristow reckons LADY GAGA has more chance of being world champ than Gary Anderson — unless he toughens up.

The Crafty Cockney lashed Ando after claims from the Scot's manager Tommy Gilmour gamesmanship cost him Alexandra Palace glory.
Gilmour criticised broken leg victim Simon Whitlock for LIMPING to upset Anderson during their quarter-final clash.
Bristow blasted: "It's all a load of nonsense, he's looking for excuses all the time.
"Whitlock had a broken leg, what was he expecting him to do, run up and down the oche?
"Gary is an absolutely brilliant player, but for some reason he is mentally weak. In one match he can turn up and be unstoppable.
"Then the next he can fall asleep, lose the plot, can't hit a double and then starts laughing. He needs to stop that.
"I see that even Lady GaGa is playing darts now. If Gary doesn't eliminate this from his game she's got more chance of being world champion."
Five-times world supremo Bristow disagrees that the dark arts of darts is on the increase.
He added: "There's no cheating in darts, it's a load of nonsense.
"There's nothing wrong in slowing a game down, that's not cheating, that's just tactics.
"You see it in football to upset another team's play and it's not classed as cheating. If he doesn't like the sport then he should pack it in and become a dustman.
"Gary's just got to get all the excuses and rubbish out of his head. He's an amazing player and will be world champion one day. But all this has to stop now."
Bristow, Ando and Adrian Lewis are special guests at Hibs star Ian Murray's testimonial at the Corn Exchange on Sunday.They take to the stage at 12.30pm and tickets are still available.
Anderson is also doing a three-night Scottish tour in Falkirk, Dalbeattie and Buckie from January 20 to 22.

O'Shea beats Martin Adams

Tony O'Shea ended Martin Adams' hopes of a third successive world championship title with a 5-2 quarter-final win at the Lakeside.

The number eight seed, a runner-up in 2009, will now meet Dutchman Wesley Harms in the semi-finals.
Harms, the 13th seed on his Lakeside debut, beat Paul Jennings 5-2 to reach the last four.
In the women's tournament, England's Deta Hedman will play Russian Anastasia Dobromyslova in Friday's final.
Hedman beat Lorraine Farlam 2-1 in the semi-finals, while Dobromyslova triumphed 2-0 over nine-time champion Trina Gulliver, who has failed to reach the final for the first time.
O'Shea's victory over world number one Adams leaves the man from Stockport as the highest seed left in the tournament.
"I knew the pressure Martin was under," said O'Shea. "To play well and beat him has made my year.
"I've played better than that, but if I can play that well in front of this crowd, then there's nothing I can't do."
In Friday's quarter-finals Alan Norris meets Christian Kist and Ted Hankey takes on Martin Atkins.

Hedman Wants This Years Title

Oxfordshire's Deta Hedman says she hopes this will be the year she finally wins the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship.

The 52-year-old from Witham is back in action at Frimley Green in Surrey at 1700 BST as she faces Lorraine Farlam in the semi-finals.
She is ranked number one for the World Championships and progressed with a 2-1 victory against Wales' Rhian Edwards.
"It is every woman's dream to be world champion," she told BBC Radio Oxford.
Hedman is bidding to take her place in the final where she will come up against the winner of the clash between Trina Gulliver or Anastasia Dobromyslova.

And ahead of her big date, Hedman says she is feeling calm and composed and will not let the pressure get to her.
"Lorraine is a fantastic player but at the end of the day she has three darts and I have three darts and that is the best way of approaching it. I will just let the darts do the talking," she said.
"There is always pressure whether you are number or not. I just take it all in my stride. I've been favourite for so many tournaments that I'm used to it.
"I just take it one game at a time and then at the end of it I want to be the winner otherwise I wouldn't put so much effort into it."
Hedman has had a glittering career but admits she is desperate to add the BDO title to her CV.
"It is the only one I haven't won and I would like to win at least once and hopefully this is my year," she added. "It is everyone's goal to win the world championship."

Hankey Beats Waites

A remarkable night of darts at the Lakeside saw two of the top three seeds beaten in the second round with both Scott Waites and Dean Winstanley sent packing by Ted Hankey and Alan Norris.

Two-time winner Hankey is a big name in the BDO World Championship, but he was only seeded down at 15 and 2011 World Masters champion Waites was expected to be too hot for him to handle.

Waites was also a winner of the Grand Slam of Darts when beating the PDC players and was a big favourite to claim a first Lakeside world title.

However, 'The Count' hung in there as second seed Waites dominated scoring but could not nail his doubles and time and again Hankey was able to step in and save himself.

Hankey twice fought back from a set down to force a decider, but the nerves still showed as he missed his first five match-winning doubles.

Eventually, Stoke thrower Hankey held his nerve though as he finally checked out on 144 to claim a thrilling 4-3 victory and book his place in the quarter-finals once again.

An even bigger shock came later on, but it never seemed to be on as last year's runner-up Winstanley cruised into a 3-1 lead over Scotsman Norris to have one foot in the last eight.

'Chuck' Norris showed all of his fighting spirit to battle back though, even if he had been up since 7.30am nervously practising for his match that did not begin until just after 9.30pm.

Norris hit back to level it up at 3-3 and then it was he, rather than his more experience opponent, who managed to produce the better darts to go through after another 4-3 epic.

Hankey will now play fellow Englishman Martin Atkins in the quarter-finals after he defeated Dutch 10th seed Willy van de Wiel 4-2 in their second round match.

With the bottom half of the draw blown wide open after Wednesday results, Norris now plays young Christian Kist after his impressive victory over Geert De Vos.

Gary Anderson eyes win over new PDC champion Adrian Lewis

GARY ANDERSON aims to take the scalp of darts world champion Adrian Lewis in honour of Ian Murray.
The Flying Scotsman is in Edinburgh on Sunday for a challenge match against the newly-crowned PDC king.
Anderson and Lewis will be joined by Eric Bristow at the city’s Corn Exchange as part of the Hibs skipper’s testimonial celebrations and the Scot will have the first chance to topple Lewis since the Englishman retained his world title last week.
Eyemouth ace Anderson, who has also pencilled in a three-night Scottish tour at Falkirk, Dalbeattie and Buckie from January 20 to 22, said: “It is always good when you’re playing against Adrian and it’s an added incentive now he’s two-time champion of the world.
“That’s where I want to be so, of course, I’m looking to win on home soil.
“But the big part of the day is getting back up the road to support one of Edinburgh’s favourite sportsmen.
“In my younger days when I was coming up through the ranks, I played a lot of darts in the area and I received tremendous support from the people.
“Scots people always have had a close affection with their sportsmen and women and I was delighted when I was asked to return for Ian, as I know he’s well regarded in the city.
“It should be a great day and, of course, if I can win, it will make it all the better.”
Anderson, Lewis and Bristow will take to the stage at 12.30pm at the Corn Exchange and tickets are still available for the event.

GARY ANDERSON'S boss Tommy Gilmour has called for gamesmanship to be BANNED.

It comes after The Flying Scotsman's world title bid was derailed by another controversial incident.
Ando crashed out in the quarter-finals to broken ankle victim Aussie Simon Whitlock who clearly upset the Scot's fluency by hesitating and limping to and from the oche.
Anderson looked agitated by Whitlock and never recovered his composure, going on to lose 5-1.
It's the third time that he has been affected in an oche controversy.
In 2009 Ando was involved in 'Floorboardgate' when he claimed Adrian Lewis was stomping back from the oche.
Then back in November he stormed off stage in the Players' Championship claiming that opponent Jamie Caven was SNIFFING loudly to distract him — dubbed 'Sniffgate'.
The dark arts of darts has been back on the increase.
There's been accusations of players grinding arrows, muttering, blowing on their rivals and BREAKING WIND to annoy their opponents.
Even a breeze halted Lewis and Wade's PDC world semi-final which some claim was gamesmanship from Jackpot.
Likewise Lewis delayed his Premier League clash with Anderson at the SECC last year after coins were thrown on the stage. Lewis went on to win both games.
Gilmour said: "It has to be stopped. The Darts Regulation Authority and PDC must act now to stop it undermining a great sport.
"Great players should only be concentrating on high scores and checkouts, not on cheating. It's doing a great disservice to the sport.
"The incidents are on the increase and any doubt should be stamped out and then players punished.
"We can't have situations where players are limping one minute and OK the next, but managing to delay rivals and ruin the game.
"The DRA and PDC know the players better than anyone, they'd recognise gamesmanship — and stop it."
Anderson admitted he needs to toughen up to deal with distractions.
He said: "I just want to play darts and win or lose I don't care, as long as it's fair and square.
"But not all players want to do that. I need to work on my game to deal with it.
"I don't feel I should have to. If a rival wants to mess about I'd rather just pack up my darts and go home."

Wolfie Beats Stone

Defending champion Martin Adams breezed into the quarter-finals of the BDO World Championships on Tuesday night with a rout of Scot Gary Stone.

The Londoner, seeking a fourth title after wins in 2007, 2010 and last year, averaged just over 90 as he ruthlessly swept aside Stone 4-0 at Frimley Green.
"I take it round by round," Adams stated after his emphatic victory. "Hopefully there will be players to push me and that's when I'll find out if I've still got it."
Paul Jennings was the first player of the evening to progress from the second round at Lakeside as he saw off Steve Douglas 4-2.
He was joined in the quarter-finals by 27-year-old Dutch electrician Wesley Harms who came from a set down to produce an upset, comprehensively defeating Robbie Green 4-1.
2009 finalist Tony O'Shea won the day's final match as he easily got the better of Scotland's Ross Montgomery, emerging a 4-1 winner.

Duo Up For The Cup

The field for the PDC World Cup of Darts has been confirmed with English duo Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis named as the top seeds.

The second PDC World Cup will be live on Sky Sports from February 3-5 at the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg, featuring 24 countries competing for a £150,000 prize fund.
England have been installed as top seeds with Australian duo Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson number two and defending champions the Netherlands number three, with Raymond van Barneveld and Vincent van der Voort confirmed in their team.
Scotland's Gary Anderson and Peter Wright are seeded four, Welsh pair Mark Webster and Richie Burnett are five, Northern Ireland's Brendan Dolan and Michael Mansell are six, Belgium's Kim Huybrechts and Kurt Van De Rijck are seven and the German pair of Jyhan Artut and Bernd Roith are the eighth seed on home soil.
The top eight seeds will enter the tournament at the second round stage, with the teams ranked 9-24 contesting the first round in the opening session on Friday February 3.
Five new countries will compete for the first time in 2012, including South Africa, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Tony West out of comp

Belgian Geert De Vos pulled off an upset in the first round of the BDO World Championship at Frimley Green tonight with a 3-1 win over 11th seed Tony West, while last year's finalist Dean Winstanley eased into round two.

De Vos showed no nerves on his big-time debut, starting the match with a 15-dart leg as he took the first set before West - playing with borrowed darts - battled back to draw level.

De Vos nudged back in front by taking the third set with a 99 finish including two consecutive double tops, then clinched the match in the following set by hitting double 10.

Alan Norris used all his experience to edge out 14th seed Benito van de Pas 3-2 after the 18-year-old Dutchman had twice fought back from a set down to force the decider.

Norris missed double top for the match in the fourth set but rallied to take control of the decider and won the match with a 74 check-out.

In the last match of the night, Winstanley got his campaign up and running with a comfortable 3-1 success against Dutchman Joey ten Berge.

Hankey Fights Through

Former champion Ted Hankey moved into the last 16 of the BDO World Championship with a 3-2 win over Clive Barden.

'The Count' threw away a 2-0 lead against debutant Barden before eventually winning a thrilling deciding set, taking out 85 to seal his place in the second round.
The news was not so good for another ex-Lakeside winner, however, as John Walton was knocked out by fellow Yorkshireman Martin Atkins.
The 2001 champion did manage to take the opening set but from then on his form dipped, allowing Atkins to clinch a 3-1 victory.
Scott Waites, the joint favourite, saw off Andy Boulton 3-1 after a brilliant start was curtailed by Boulton's spirited fightback.
Christian Kist upset sixth seed Jan Dekker with a 3-2 win, beating his fellow Dutchman in 48 minutes. Compatriot Willy van de Wiel is also through after a 3-0 result against Dave Prins.
In an all-English battle, Paul Jennings got the better of Garry Thompson by a 3-1 scoreline.

Wolfie Off To A Win

Defending champion Martin Adams cruised into the second round of the BDO World Championship with a 3-0 victory over Scott Mitchell at Frimley Green.

The top seed, 55, who is looking to match Eric Bristow's record of three successive triumphs and is also seeking his fourth Lakeside crown overall having first been victorious in 2007, overcame a few scares before beating his fellow Englishman in just 26 minutes.
He told www.dartswdf.com: "I had some shaky moments. No one likes to play the first round but you have to do it. I had big finishes when I needed them."
Adams, making his record-breaking 19th appearance at the event, will now meet Gary Stone in the next round after the Scottish qualifier knocked out Dutch 16th seed Ron Meulenkamp 3-0.
Eighth seed Tony O'Shea, the 2009 runner-up, also enjoyed an easy 3-0 victory against Steve West, and he will next face number nine Ross Montgomery, a 3-1 winner over Fabian Roosenbrand.
Montgomery said: "I will need to sharpen up my doubles for my next match with Tony or he will punish me."
In the evening session, fourth seed Robbie Green booked his spot in the second round with a 3-1 win over Darryl Fitton.
But the biggest upset of the opening day came when number five seed Gary Robson was knocked out by Steve Douglas in a 3-0 whitewash.

Lewis Hits The Gym

Adrian Lewis has turned to the first lady of boxing to end his reign as a heavyweight champion.
The English ace retained his Ladbrokes PDC darts world title with a 7-3 triumph against Andy Hamilton on Monday.
But Lewis isn’t resting on his laurels and has hired former female boxing champ Jane Couch as his fitness coach.
The 26-year-old, who weighs around 20st, vowed to start a new regime after munching crisps and chocolate at 4am on the eve of the final.
He said: “Jane texted me the other day and said, ‘Looks like you’ve put on a few pounds.’ It wasn’t nasty and I told her I could do with going to her gym.
“Jane said, ‘Great, come on over – the next time any of the players p**s you off, you can knock them out.’
“The majority of players are serious about being fitter. They are drinking diet coke instead of lager in the practice room and if I’m going to stay ahead, that’s what I’ll have to do.
“I was a goalkeeper at Crewe as a kid but piled on pounds when I stopped training every day.”

Wayne Mardle Says This One Has Been The Best

Wayne Mardle says that this year's World Darts Championship has been the best one ever, and hopes that the final between Adrian Lewis and Andy Hamilton lives up to the drama of the rest of the event.

Sunday's semi-finals had everything, with a thrilling marathon battle between Hamilton and Simon Whitlock before some drama with a rogue breeze followed by an almighty comeback from Lewis against James Wade.
Wayne Mardle was present as part of the Sky Sports commentary team during the unique wind drama, as Wade and Lewis left the stage twice due to the breeze blowing across the oche.
Wade was 2-0 up, then 5-1 in front and cruising before missing a dart for the match and then watching as 'Jackpot' Lewis came storming back to book his place in the final again, 12 months after lifting the title for the first time.

"It got sorted out in the end but personally if I was James wade I would have carried on as he was 2-0 up at the time.
"I was in the commentary box and Lewis looked a beaten man at 5-1 down his body language saying I just want to get off this stage. But for some inexplicable reason Wade went off the boil and gave Lewis the hope he needed.
"I've lost five World semi-finals myself but I've never had a dart to get through to the final. Wade's won many majors but never quite performed in the World Championship and that will grind on him for quite a while - what it does to him mentally I really don't know."
Defending champion Lewis now plays fellow Stoke thrower Andy Hamilton in the final to try and retain his title, and after so many shocks in the tournament Mardle hopes the final can live up to it.
"It's got better and better. It's been so special all the way through you just want it to continue - it's set up for a brilliant final and I hope they can deliver all that they've delivered all the way through. I'm going to go for 7-4 to Adrian just because he's been there and done it.

"It's the best tournament I've ever seen, there's no doubt about it, I just think the standard now is amazing, we haven't seen so many 100 averages but we've seen so many more close quality games and that's testament to the PDC for putting on the tour events throughout the year and bringing through these good young players.
"The coming years on Sky Sports are going to be a joy because these young players will be coming through and showing what they can do."
Phil Taylor will not add to his 15 world titles this year after being knocked out by Dave Chisnall, but Mardle warned against writing the great man off.
"Never, ever, ever write off Phil Taylor. "People have done it before. I've always been a Phil Taylor fan which is probably why he gets the better of me all the time.
"But I still think he's by far the best player in the world, he's the best player the world has ever seen. Don't write him off because he will come back and he will win more world titles."

Taylor Considering Glasses Again

PHIL TAYLOR is hoping that LASERS could help him win more world titles!

The Power admits he'll have to look at wearing glasses again after losing 4-1 to Dave Chisnall in the world championships second round.
But the 15-time world champ fears another disaster after he previous specs experiment went all wrong during the Grand Slam last year.
He ditched the glasses after slumping to defeat to Ted Hankey in the Slam. Now he is pondering laser treatment to solve his eyesight problem.
Taylor said: "My eyesight's gone. I really felt it under the lights during my match with Dave. I was getting hot and I wasn't focusing right, and that's the first time it's happened.
"It's a big concern going back to the glasses because that all went wrong before. I will have to try and test some specs out behind closed doors under the same sort of lights.
"But I will look at laser treatment. I will speak to a consultant over the next couple of weeks to consider whether it's glasses, contacts or laser treatment. It's a big decision."
Taylor spent the last week laying FLOORING in his garage after Chisnall's demolition job.
The Power is determined to prepare properly for the future including the McCoy's Premier League starting in February.
He will is also starting filming this week for a health and nutrition documentary on Active Channel, Sky 281, as he bids to up his stamina. It was arranged by his nutritionist Laura Church.
He added: "I'm going back to the drawing board. I'm stripping back my entire life to make me fitter in mind and body.
"If I'm to compete with guys half my age I must do something about my lifestyle, it's just not good enough.
"I've been laying flooring in the garage as well and that underlines how tough real work is away from the oche.
"I would rather have been in the final at the weekend!
"But this is all about setting up my practice room properly because I need to put the hours in before the Premier League. Phil Taylor will be back leaner and meaner, in mind and body."
THE chase for Premier League places will be an intriguing battle. As it stands Taylor, Adrian Lewis, James Wade and Gary Anderson have guaranteed their places.
But five to seven after the worlds will be from Simon Whitlock, Wes Newton, Andy Hamilton, Mark Webster, Raymond van Barneveld and Kevin Painter.
